Let’s Talk Honest About Freelance Writing

Think before you make a career shift.

I know it takes more than age and connections to land a freelance gig these days. As a mom, I honestly embody a generation of older workers who has been used to working in cubicles with fixed hours.

Really, venturing into freelance writing may seem to be “a walk in the park” alternative for any individual. Because,  you can control your own schedule and seek your own projects.

But it ain’t. Opportunities can be hard to find depending on the season and demand for freelance workers.

This aside from the fact that going for freelancing can be competitive because you have to show your skills set against younger workers who are more in tune with trends.

The pay can also be less  ideal for freelance writing, if you’re used to getting a fixed salary rate.

How freelance writing stands out as a viable job for moms like me? It allows one to work in a given schedule accustomed to by moms on a weekday.

SETTING EXPECTATIONS

So what can one expect as a freelancer?

Before you take that plunge and shift gears, here note the realities of finding your own job as a freelancer that is outside the traditional work space.

TIPS FOR YOUNG FREELANCE WRITERS

You can’t afford to be complacent.

Freelance writing is not as stable as getting employment on full-time. As a writer, you have to bring in your passion and dedication in your every output. Because what can set one worker apart from another is the output= written work in this case, which must always be at par with the standards expected from him/her.

You deal with different employer attitude and work standards.

Some employers can be democratic when it comes to observing the work schedule. While others can have an eagle-eye for pinpointing the slightest grammatical flaws.

But a fact remains that freelancing is a good way to find out how you can use your skills to your current work realities while meeting the deadline of your boss.

One thing is sure, freelance writing will allow you to gain some points for learning and growth as a freelancer because of the variety of projects you can choose from.

You can prioritize your tasks and select your projects.

Freelance writing gives you the enjoyment of picking your projects. And also lets you communicate the kind of writing style you have.

It is also more “performance-based” hence, the quality of work and not just the number of hours spent on the desk can be counted upon. These are just some expectations.

Bottom line, as a freelance writer, the right motivation can help you to be good in what you do.

So when searching for some freelance writing gigs, make sure to avoid the mistakes in job-hunting.
